ARTIST STATEMENT

I value simple connections, and express and explore this through fabric collage, sculpture and drawing. I take apart material and pattern and reshape it into new geometric patterned objects. I take cues from the material itself such as: the surface color and (manufactured) print of the fabric, the direction of the weave as well as evidence of its “used” life shown in faded circles or fold lines, stains and rips. By taking these abstract cues as facts, I am able to reinvent something new according to a different kind of logic.

In the drawings I conduct a similar process. Inspired by structures and geometry in my surroundings, I introduce invented forms and shapes with found images to create something spontaneous and contextually/visually abstract. Using images and ideas as seams, I playfully arrange - using fabric, painted stencils, ink prints, carbon and watercolor drawings – to form a composition based on conceptual relationship and visual pattern.
